Housing Benefit

Capping of benefits for Under 35s

From April 2019, the amount of help you can get through benefits if you are in social housing will be capped at the level you would get if you were renting in the private sector.

The biggest group of people this will affect are those who are single, have no children living with them, who are aged under 35. This is because in the private sector people in this group are only entitled to help with their rent up to the amount they would pay for a room in shared accommodation. This change won’t affect every single person under 35 and so we are contacting people who might be affected by this to talk to them about their options.
