Merstham Regeneration Plan

What's proposed

Merstham regeneration proposals aim to deliver:

  • a mix of new private and social homes for rent on Portland Drive and Purbeck Close sites;
  • a new foodstore and six new shops on the triangle site
  • a new community hub which will include the library, community facilities, a new community café and private flats above on the Iron Horse pub site road, and
  • environmental improvements to Nailsworth Crescent, Portland Drive, Bletchingley Road junction and Hildenley junction to ensure safe and secure access.

Planning framework has been approved

The Merstham Estate Local Centre Planning Framework was approved by Reigate & Banstead Borough Council's Executive on 17 November 2011. The framework incorporates feedback from local residents following the public consultation over the summer, which attracted over 180 people and resulted in 200 feedback forms being given in.

Residents have said they want to keep key local shops on the estate, in particular takeaways, the Post Office, dry cleaners and a pharmacy. Most said they preferred a "community hub" on the old Iron Horse site which should include the library, provide internet access and be a meeting place for local groups.

More details about exactly what has been agreed will appear in the March issue of "Merstham News". You can find out more about the consultation by visiting www.reigate-banstead.gov.uk/mersthamregeneration

Next steps

Approval of the framework has meant that Raven can start the process of finding a developer partner that will build the new development in Merstham. The first step is to look for the best possible retailer for the new food store which is planned for the triangle site.

Merstham Regeneration Group

While everyone in Merstham will have the opportunity to see the plans and comment on them before an application is made, we are working closely with the Merstham Regeneration Group (MRG), a resident-led group who ensure that residents' views and concerns are heard throughout the development process. They will have input on the design of the development and will be involved on the tender evaluation panel for developers.

The MRG has seven members who live in the local area. There are three vacancies so if you are interested in joining please call 01737 272473 or email mersthamregen@gmail.com. Training is available.
